VMware EVO:RAIL

World! Meet Hyper-Converged Infrastructure EVO:RAIL

EVO:RAIL. We saw this one coming. There was a lot of speculation over Project Mystic and Project MARVIN the last few months. Finally we got our answer. VMware announced at VMworld EVO:RAIL. EVO:RAIL Is not a common VMware product name. How they came up with this name is explained on the internet but it sounds strange to my ears. At least it's great that there is now an opposing force in the market.

EVO:RAIL is a scalable Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) building block that delivers compute, networking, storage, and management to empower private or hybrid-cloud, end-user computing, test/dev, and branch office environments. EVO:RAIL is delivered through VMware’s partners as a complete appliance solution with hardware, software and support. VMware is not entering the hardware market and is always about software. Therefore VMware agreed to work together on this with partners like EMC, Dell, Fujitsu, NetOne, Inspur and SuperMicro.

What do you get

The EVO:RAIL software bundle is pre-loaded onto the EVO:RAIL qualified partner’s hardware and consists of:

  • EVO: RAIL Deployment, Configuration, and Management vSphere Enterprise Plus, including ESXi for compute
  • VMware Virtual SANTM for storage
  • vCenter Server
  • vCenter Log Insight

Each EVO:RAIL appliance consists of a prescriptive hardware matrix that is configured on the partner’s hardware platform. EVO:RAIL partners will provide value-added services, software and capabilities over time, so you can choose the best solution for your needs. Each EVO:RAIL appliance is a 2U 4-Node x86 server system, with the following configuration:

4 independent nodes sharing dual-redundant power supplies, Scale-out at initial release is 4 appliances and 16 nodes. Each node contains:

  • Dual Ivy-bridge processors
  • 192 GB of memory
  • 3 x 1.2 TB HDD for the Virtual SAN disk group
  • 1 x 400 GB Flash SDD for Virtual SAN read/write cache
  • 2 x 10 GbE Network Ports (SFP+ or RJ-45)
  • Boot device (either a boot drive or SATADOM) for ESXi

According to VMware EVO:RAIL has a couple of major advantages over traditional infrastructure. Software-Defined, Simplicity, Highly Resilient and above all a Customer Choice. EVO:RAIL enables deployment, configuration, and management through a new, intuitive HTML5-based user interface. From what I have seen it looks awesome. Easy simple and flexible
