VMware vSphere 4.1

on Sunday, 12 September 2010. Posted in VMware

Yes it's there. VMware vSphere 4.1.

There is a dramatic expansion and scale for the platform as new capabilities for the most efficient aggregation of all datacenter resources into an elastic pool of computing power that applications utilize on an as needed basis. The main focus is: Cloud and ESX4i. vSphere 4.1 provides the optimum combination of agility with enterprise-class control. vSphere delivers zero-touch infrastructure, with built-in availability, scalability, security, and performance guarantees.

There are definitively additional New Enhancements for:

  • Fault Tolerance (FT)
  • Host Profiles
  • Active Directory Integration
  • Nexus 1000V
  • Network and Storage

Lets zoom in on these last two; Network and Storage. The new network features can be categorized into four areas: Performance and scale, Traffic management, IPv6 and Nexus 1000V enhancements. The three new storage features are Storage I/O Control, VAAI and new performance metrics for storage monitoring and trouble shooting. Two additional new ones are support of iSCSI offloads with Broadcom offload cards and Support for 8Gb HBAs.

A really new cool features is the ability to set shares for I/O which is done via edit properties on the virtual machine. COOL!!! Storage VMotion is now done faster too (VAAI). Not that I use it that often. But it could save you plenty of time when moving data arround. Off course there is mutch more and I’m not going to repeat all the information which is already put on blog sites of vColleagues. Below you can find some interesting links regarding VMware vSphere 4.1 and his new features.
